What is Six Month Smiles?

Six Month Smiles is a relatively new approach to orthodontics using clear brackets and tooth colored wires. In an average of six months you can have straight, well aligned front teeth. Given the fact that treatment is generally complete in such a short time, it’s also known as “short term orthodontics”.

What will these short term braces look like?

We bond clear brackets onto your teeth and then use tooth colored wires in place of the metal colored wires common with traditional orthodontics. These tooth colored wires are much less obvious. In casual conversation, many times people will not even notice them!

How does Six Month Smiles differ from traditional orthodontics?

With traditional orthodontics the focus is not only on straightening your teeth, but also deals with how your back teeth come together (occlude) as well as other specific relationships. Most of us can chew perfectly well, and don’t have any problems with our bite. The Six Month Smiles approach realizes this, and thus focuses on that part of our smile that everyone sees – the front teeth!

How can it take only six months?

Traditional braces, since they also deal with the position of the back teeth can take 1-2 years (in some cases even more) to complete treatment. Posterior teeth are more difficult to move owing to the additional bone present around those teeth which make them capable of supporting strong chewing forces. Six Month Smiles focuses on the front teeth, therefor we can use light steady forces to gently and efficiently move the teeth into their desired position in roughly six months. Since people and situations do vary, the actual treatment time is between 4 and 9 months – with a majority of cases completed in just six.
